A Letter from Sister Therese                                                               Return to top

As I write this to you my heart is full of gratitude.  Some time ago I remember reading that gratitude is a passionate transformative force that bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies that change forever how we experience life and the world.  My life and my experience of the world has indeed been changed by all of you these many years.

I have immense gratitude:  for the team I have had the pleasure and honor to be a part of here at Mercy Prayer Center, for the daily blessings I have received from each of them, gratitude for the beauty of the work itself and the way it has deepened my spirituality and gratitude for all of you who have come to the Mercy Prayer Center.  You have touched my life with your deep faith, your courage, trust and hope in the God who loves and continually guides us on our life journey.  My years at Mercy Prayer Center have been tremendously happy.

The vision and ministry of the Mercy Prayer Center attracted me from its beginning back in 1978 but then I was highly involved in education.  Still, that quiet, consistent attraction lingered, becoming overwhelming at times, even now almost 30 years later as I have continued to envision myself in this sacred ministry.

Now, I feel it is time to “let go” of the comfortableness and security of what I know, have learned and have grown to love here at the Mercy Prayer Center and to risk the uncomfortableness and challenge of a “new way”.  Yes, even in old age one can be challenged to a new way – right?

How can one put words around those intangibles involved in the “call” to a ministry like Mercy Prayer Center and the giftedness I have received here?  I really can’t – there are too many – too close to the heart.  I can only trust that somehow you know.

Peace to you all.                                                                               Return to top

How is Mercy Prayer Center Funded?

You might be interested in knowing more about Mercy Prayer Center finances.  Many people assume that our program revenue covers our budget or that we get funding from the Diocese of Rochester.  It doesn’t and we don’t.  In fact, our program revenue only covers 40% of our operating costs.  Here are some facts that might be of interest to you.

Our Fiscal Year 2008 - 2009 budget calls for total expenses of $350,000.  That includes building and occupancy expenses, program and staff office staff, insurance, supplies, and lots of food.  In order to balance our budget, we must raise $81,500 in charitable donations, and that is over and above a $60,000 subsidy from the Sisters of Mercy.

Mercy Prayer Center will be launching an annual giving campaign this year and will be conducting at least one special event fundraiser.  Foundations grants is also part of the effort.

If and when you are asked, we pray you will be generous.                                                                                 Return to top

        Thank you.

Parable of the Talents Challenge                          Return to top

Text Box: The Parable of the Talents Challenge is a first-ever event for Mercy Prayer Center and for Rochester.  It is based on the gospel parable in Mathew (25:14-30) and will challenge people to use their God-given gifts and talents to help others and help build community.
The challenge will involve recruiting up to 300 “Talent Volunteers” who will be given $50 dollars each and asked to use the money to make and sell or do something that will raise money for the Prayer Center programs and also help build our community and help others at the same time.  Volunteers will be doing a multitude of things like making crafts and selling them, providing services, holding dinner parties, even tutoring or giving lessons.
Seed money will be raised in advance to cover the $50 challenges and will add to the total raised.  10% of the money raised will be tithed to the Water for Sudan Project, a Rochester based charity that builds freshwater drinking wells in Sudan .

The Challenge will begin with a kickoff event in the spring 2009 and will close seven weeks later with a dedication event where reports on the good that was done will be shared and the results will be tallied.

The buzz question around the Prayer Center recently has been, “What are you going to do with Your fifty dollars?”  We are expecting lots of “talent volunteers” both already involved with the Prayer Center and those new to the Prayer Center.  If you have ideas on what you could do with your $50, please email them to info@mercyprayercenter.org.  We will be publishing an ideas book and would like to include your ideas.
