Spiritual Direction
-------------
Spiritual
direction is based on a compatible relationship between two persons: the
Director and the Person receiving direction. It requires a commitment on
the part of both. In order to make our meetings as helpful as possible,
there are some points which both persons need to understand and accept.
1)
The relationship between the Director and the Person receiving
direction must be one of honesty and openness. If either person feels
constraint in this regard, it is helpful to discuss the matter freely
and, if it seems best, to end the relationship.
2)
It is important that direction is treated with confidentiality.
Nothing that the Person receiving direction shares will be spoken of
outside the session except with his or her consent.
3)
The Person receiving direction is responsible to be mindful of
the date and time of scheduled appointments, and to give the Director as
much notice as possible when an appointment must be canceled. The
Director has a similar responsibility.
4)
Sessions are usually scheduled once a month, and usually last
about an hour. It is good for the Person receiving direction to keep
this in mind, and to plan for the meetings so that what is most
important is shared early in the meeting.
5)
Spiritual Direction involves a professional as well as a
spiritual relationship. While everyone cannot make the same offering for
the time and help of the Director, we ask
that each Person receiving direction give an offering according to his
or her means. No one is ever refused because of inability to
contribute.
6)
The Person receiving direction has full freedom to discontinue
direction at any time, but we ask that he or she inform the Director of
this rather than simply dropping out.
